  • 1. d4 Ng8f6 2. Nb1c3
? This is a good move, bad move, or interesting, depending on your playing ability. Beginner - Good as the knight is developed towards the centre. Intermediate - Poor as the knight blocks the c-pawn which is critical for the break move c4 in most queens pawn openings. Advanced - White seeks to play the off beat Veresov.
    • 2... d5 3. Ng1f3
The Veresov continues with 3.Bg5, so White has to given a poor move for 2.Nc3.
      • 3... Nf6e4
? Black should seek to develop before seeking complications.
        • 4. Nc3xe4 dxe4 5. Nf3g5 f5 6. e3 g6
? After 7.Bc4 black has major problems on f7. The best I could find was 7...e6 giving up a pawn.
          • 7. Bf1c4
! See last. White is better.
            • 7... e6 8. c3
?? White loses the plot and probably the game. 8.Bxe6 or 8.Nxe6 wins a pawn, but black's king is very open. White would develop and play a well timed break on the king side.
              • 8... Qd8xg5 9. g3 Bf8d6 10. Qd1a4 Bc8d7 11. Qa4b3 Ke8e7
Black hopes that his king will be safe in the centre as all the pawns are on the board, white has a long way to go to develop and black will be able to use his superior force to protect the king.
                • 12. Bc1d2 Nb8c6 13. Bc4e2 b5
A pseudo sacrifice as after 14.Bxb5 Rb8 the bishop is pinned to the queen. If the queen tries to break the pin, the knight misht be able to discover an attack on the bishop, with some complicated tactics. 14.Qxb5 Rb8 allows Black's rook to capture on b2 and double on the b-file.
                  • 14. Qb3c2 a5
Black can afford to be caviler with his queen side pawns, due to his material advantage. Black hopes these advances will open up the game for his superior material.
                    • 15. b3 Ra8b8 16. c4
White threatens 17.c5 trapping the bishop, but White's advance will lead to an open file, which black already occupies.
