White steam rolls his opponant in a great example of how not to play the QGA

  • 1. d4 d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. Ng1f3 c5 4. d5 Ng8f6 5. Nb1c3 Nb8a6
? Up until now, this game had been a relatively normal queen's gambit accepted. This move breaks of the beaten path, but not in a good way for black. The knight is very poorly developed on the a6 square and will soon have to move again. ...Nb8-d7 is a much stronger and common developing move for the knight. The only possible plan for this move is ...Na6-c7 then ...b7-b5. But this is unrealistic in the current situation. Besides 5...Ne7, 5...e6!? is perfectly playable after the possible continuation 6.e4 exd4 with only a slight pull for white.
  • 6. e4
! A strong move which grabs space in the center and targets the c4 pawn for destruction.
  • 6... b5
?! This move tries to save the extra pawn that black has aquired, but only succedes in destroying black's queenside. 6...Qa5 would have shown a better understanding of the position after the continuation 7.Bd2 (7.Bxc4?! Nxe4 allows black to blunt white's advantage) 7...b5 8.e5 Nd7 although white's advantage is obvious.
  • 7. Nc3xb5 Nf6xe4
?? This is, really, quite a sad move. The only way to save the game was 7...Qa5!? Although 8.Nc3 Nxe4 9.Bd2 (9.Bxc4? Nxc3! and suddenly black is back in the game) 9...Nd6 10.Ne4 Qd8 (10...Qb6 11.Ne5! is very dangerous for black. It's always a scary thing when animals attack.) 11.Nxd6 exd6 12.Bxc4 leaves a position that I would loath to play as black. Now white is clearly winning.
  • 8. Qd1a4
!! A truely dominating move. White goes straight for the throat with decisive queenside penetration.......(bow-chica-bow-wow)
  • 8... Qd8d7
? Before I explain why this move is bad, and it is, it is important to understand why black did it. Look at the knight on a6, it is truly a decrepit piece. Simply incapable of doing anything but observing, it is a perfect example of the saying, "A knight on the rim is grim". It would be doing so much move on the e7 square, or even back on b8. Because of its location, the light squred bishop must babysit the piece. But the only true path for black here is 8...Bd7. While this does give up the knight, the move 8...Qd7 overextends black's army trying to protect every piece at once. Now white can sweep in and decisively end the game.
  • 9. Bf1xc4
? This isn't a bad move in so much as it fails to take into accound the error of black's previous move. The increadibly strong 9.Ne5! wins black's queen. How? You might ask, allow me to show you. Ex. 9...Qb7 1.Nb6+ wins; 9...Qg4 10.Nd6+ Ke8 11.Nxf7+ and black can resign; are a couple examples.
  • 9... Na6b4 10. O-O
?! 10.Ne5 still begs to be played.
  • 10... Ra8b8
? 10...f6 was the only hope, but black is still doing much, much worse.
  • 11. Bc1f4 Rb8b6 12. Rf1e1 f5
? Obviously black is fully unaware of the threats encircling his king. But it doesn't really matter, his position is horible.
