Bishop and Knight Mate

The most difficult basic checkmate: bishop, knight, and king force mate in the correct corner.

The Bishop and Knight Mate is the most difficult of the basic checkmates—forcing checkmate with only a bishop, knight, and king against a lone king. The checkmate must be delivered in a corner controlled by the bishop (the same colour as the bishop's squares).

Key Technique

  • The defending king must be driven to a corner of the bishop's colour.
  • If the king escapes to the wrong corner, the W-manoeuvre is used to guide it to the correct one.
  • The process requires up to 33 moves—within the 50-move rule.

This is considered the most challenging basic endgame.
