Blind Swine Mate

Two rooks on the seventh rank deliver checkmate by trapping the king on the back rank.

The Blind Swine Mate involves two rooks (the "pigs" or "swine" ) on the seventh rank delivering checkmate. The colourful name is attributed to Polish-French grandmaster Dawid Janowski (1868–1927).

How it works

  • One rook captures a shielding pawn on the seventh rank, delivering check.
  • The king is forced to the back rank.
  • The other rook delivers checkmate along the seventh rank.

The term "blind pigs" refers to rooks on the seventh rank that threaten everything but cannot immediately see a forced mate—until the decisive capture opens the way.
