Checkmate Patterns : Epaulette Mate Explained
Queen or rook delivers checkmate with the king trapped by its own rooks (or other pieces) on adjacent squares.
The Epaulette Mate is a checkmate pattern in chess that occurs when the mated king is trapped between two of his own pieces, typically major pieces, on the same rank. The name comes from a resemblance to the decorative shoulder pieces on a military uniform known as epaulettes.
This pattern requires the attacking player to control the squares in the rank immediately in front of the king, and forces the king between two of his own pieces on the retreat squares.
