Greco's Mate

A bishop and queen (or rook) deliver checkmate against a king trapped on the back rank.

Greco's Mate is named after the Italian chess player Gioachino Greco (c. 1600–1634), one of the earliest known chess professionals. A queen or rook delivers checkmate along a file, supported by a bishop controlling a diagonal toward the enemy king.

The manoeuvre leading to Greco's Mate often involves tactical elements such as sacrificial decoys, pins, and the exploitation of weak squares around the castled king.
