Scholars Mate

Queen and bishop combine for a four-move checkmate targeting the weak f7 (or f2) square.

Scholar's Mate is one of the shortest possible checkmates in a standard game, achievable in as few as four moves. It targets the f7-square (for Black) or f2 (for White)—the weakest point in the starting position, defended only by the king.

Scholar's Mate Example Game

White develops the queen and bishop to attack f7. If Black fails to recognise the threat—for example, playing 3...Nf6?? instead of 3...g6 or 3...Qe7—the queen captures on f7 with checkmate, supported by the bishop on c4.

Defence

Scholar's Mate is easily prevented by any player who recognises the threat. Early queen sorties can backfire, as the queen becomes a target for tempo-gaining development. Scholar's Mate is common among beginners but virtually never seen in experienced play.
