Queen Sacs, Pawn Promotions and Pennan

I completed Quest No.34 a few days ago.

Me at the remote Scottish village of Pennan. I’m outside
the famous red telephone box used in the film ‘Local Hero.’

The Quests are me setting up a chess set at various famous places.
The fun part is travelling there, getting the picture and away home.
Other than that I cannot see the point but at my age it is something to do.

Three puzzles this week all with the same theme. They are harder than usual.
Be careful with the RHP game. The obvious move fails. Here is a theme clue.

The clue is in the title. Before promoting a pawn STOP! and re-consider. Is it the
best move and why has your opponent let allowed you to play a pawn promotion.
I have found over 80 examples of Red Hot Pawn players promoting a pawn and then
needlessly getting checkmated one or two moves later. Always Pause Before Promoting.

southdown - Zambesiboy RHP 2012

51. f8=Q Qg5 Checkmate.

mcmahon - triharda RHP 2021

57. f8=Q Qh4 Checkmate.

chaddavis14 - Landslake RHP 2012

42. e8=Q Qf1 Checkmate.

ndungi - thoth RHP 2011

44. a8=Q Qe1+ 45. Kh2 g3 Checkmate.

For a change, a Black to play example. It shows another reason why you should
always Pause Before Promoting. In this case is an under promotion a better move?

ladyjam - robur RHP2011

57...c1=Q 58. Qe2 Checkmate. 57...Qe3 was best and then White must surely resign.
However if you must promote then 57...c1=N would have prevented the checkmate.

Which bring us on nicely to an under promotion checkmate in 7 moves.

harazd - Johannes Goethe RHP 2011

Next a case where the losing player had clearly overlooked an under promotion.

texasnurse - happybvr RHP 2016

Staying with a Black Knight giving a checkmate. How many times do
you think this mating pattern has appeared in games on Red Hot Pawn?

Reveal Hidden Content
So far I have 189 times.

In the mirror image.

There are ‘only’ 41 examples of White delivering the checkmate.
Proof: - having the first move is not always a good thing on RHP.

I’ll give an example from a game played last year

adalia bipunctata - Mrs Hogbin 2022

And finally, The quickest under promotion to a Knight checkmate is five moves.
