A picture of me and my Chess Set at Pennan village in the remote
Scottish Highlands. It is where they filmed a lot of the scenes from
‘Local Hero’ and I’ve set up right next to the red telephone box.

Then three themed puzzles for you to solve. After that I’ve found
more examples of RHP players promoting a pawn without thinking
and finding themselves getting checkmated on the next move

How many times has this mating pattern appeared on Red Hot Pawn.

The number is quite high and it is four times higher with
White getting checkmated than Black in the mirror image.
Apparently going first on RHP means you will be first to blunder.

Finally, try this one. Compose the shortest checkmate with
an under promotion to a Knight. Black can do it in 5 moves.

Geoff's blog post reminded me of a sequence I saw decades ago, probably in Wonders and Curiosities of Chess by Irving Chernev, in which Black mates with the king's knight at move 5.

@FMDavidHLevin
curious indeed, I can't imagine many players not to take the Knight.

Nice photo. It seems I have a twin on the other side of the globe. I'm mildly shocked at how much we look alike, and the photo you posted months ago of your desk with your chess set is quite similar to mine.

That mating pattern with the black knight was published in Chess Life magazine as part of a tactics exercise about 2 years ago.

Hi David

Wonders and Curiosities of Chess by Chernev is a wonderful book. I must have got
10-15 chess columns out of it in the past 50 years. The Blog is in part inspired by that book.

I look for something (a study/problem/good OTB game or anything odd) and see
if there any RHP examples that match. Whilst looking I often stumble across some
incredible RHP games and I'm only too happy to rescue them from obscurity.

Of course some players wish I had left them unknown but most here do not mind
their leg getting pulled over a silly mistake. I sometimes wish I was not a fairly good
player.
The gang here here shrug off a blunder. Sometimes I'm annoyed with myself for
making a daft move especially if it a blunder I cannot explain. 'Why did I do that?'
As I get older these lemons are creeping in more and more.

Hi mchill
I'm curious to see my double. I'll PM you an address, send me a picture.
