Yury Dokhoian was a Russian chess Grandmaster and chess coach. He was born on October 24, 1964, and died on June 30, 2021. His highest ranking of 18th in the world was achieved in January 1995.

Infamous for being a tough and tactical player, he mostly played the Ruy Lopez chess opening and had notable victories over grandmasters such as Sergey Karjakin and Vassily Ivanchuk during his chess career.

As a coach, Dokhoian was successful as well. He worked as a trainer of the Russian women's team that won gold at the Chess Olympiad in 2012. He was also the coach of former women's world chess champion Alexandra Kosteniuk from 1997-2000 and was predominantly known for coaching former world chess champion Garry Kasparov from 1995-2005.

Apart from playing and coaching chess, he served as the deputy director of the Russian State Sports' "Young Russia" program from 2008-2011.

Dokhoian's career as a player and coach was cut short after he passed away from COVID-19 complications in 2021.
