Adjudication

Adjudication is the process by which an unfinished or disputed game is decided by an impartial authority rather than by the players themselves. An arbiter or expert panel examines the position and assigns a result—win, loss, or draw—based on the assessment of the position. Adjudication was common when games were regularly adjourned but has become rare in modern over-the-board chess. It remains relevant in correspondence chess and certain online formats.
