Chess Terms : Adjust Explained
To adjust (French: j'adoube) is to reposition a piece on its square without intending to make a move. Under the touch-move rule, a player who touches a piece is normally obliged to move it. To avoid this obligation, a player must announce "I adjust" or "j'adoube" before touching the piece. Adjusting is permitted only when it is the player's turn to move. The announcement makes clear that the touch is for tidying purposes only, not a move intention.
