Chess Terms : Announced Mate Explained
An announced mate is a declaration by a player that checkmate will be delivered within a specified number of moves. This practice was common in 19th-century chess and in certain chess problem conventions, where a player would announce "mate in three" or similar. In modern tournament play, announcing mate is unnecessary—the game continues until checkmate is delivered on the board or the opponent resigns.
