Chess Terms : Back Rank Explained
The back rank (also called the first rank or home rank) is the row of squares closest to a player—the first rank for White and the eighth rank for Black. It is the rank on which the pieces stand in the starting position. The back rank is strategically important because of the potential for back-rank mate. See also back-rank weakness.
