A breakthrough refers to a tactical situation wherein a pawn advances past opposing pawns, often by capturing, and presents a direct threat. It can also refer to a situation where a player effectively changes the pawn structure to open up lines and increase the mobility of their pieces, gaining an advantage over their opponent.
