Caïssa is the mythical goddess or muse of chess. The name originates from a poem by Sir William Jones (1763) called "Caïssa, or the Game of Chess," in which the god Mars creates chess to woo the dryad Caïssa. The name has become widely used as a personification of chess, appearing in chess literature, club names, and tournament titles.
