A candidate move is a move identified during analysis as worthy of serious consideration. The process of identifying candidate moves—examining the most promising options before calculating deeply—was systematised by Grandmaster Alexander Kotov in his book Think Like a Grandmaster (1971). Selecting the right candidate moves is a critical skill, as it determines which lines a player calculates.
