Chessboard

The chessboard is the 8×8 grid of 64 alternating light and dark squares on which chess is played. The board is oriented so that each player has a light square in the near-right corner. Columns are called files (a–h), rows are called ranks (1–8), and the slanting lines of same-coloured squares are called diagonals.
