Defence (or defense) has two meanings in chess: (1) a move, plan, or strategy aimed at countering the opponent's threats or attack; (2) in opening nomenclature, a system of play for Black (e.g. the French Defence, the Sicilian Defence). Defending is a critical skill—a well-conducted defence can neutralise even the strongest attack.
