Chess Terms : Descriptive Notation Explained
Descriptive notation is an older system of recording chess moves that was standard in English-speaking countries until the late 20th century. In this system, files are named after the pieces that stand on them in the starting position (e.g. "K4" for e4). Descriptive notation has been superseded by algebraic notation as the international standard.
