What is Illegal Move?

An illegal move is a move that violates the Laws of Chess—for example, moving a king into check, failing to escape check, or making an impossible piece movement. In tournament play, an illegal move must be retracted and replaced with a legal move using the same piece (if possible). Penalties may apply.
