J'adoube is a term used in chess to signify that a player is about to adjust the placement of a piece on its square without intending to move it to a different position. It is used to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding that could occur if a player touches a piece, as under normal rules, if a player touches a piece, they are required to move it if it is legally possible to do so.
