What is Mate?

Mate is a term used in chess to refer to a position in which a player's king is in a direct attack (check) and there is no possible move that the player can make to prevent the king's capture in the next move. This ends the game, and the player whose king is mate is considered to lose. It's the ultimate objective in a game of chess.
