What is Promotion?

Promotion is the advancement of a pawn to the eighth rank (for White) or first rank (for Black), where it is immediately replaced by a queen, rook, bishop, or knight of the same colour. Promotion to a queen (the strongest piece) is by far the most common; promotion to any other piece is called underpromotion.
