Standard Notation

Standard notation in chess is a method used to record and describe the moves in a game of chess. It is now the standard method for recording chess games, and is widely used in chess books, periodicals, and tournament reports. Each piece is identified by an uppercase letter such as K for king, Q for queen, R for rook, B for bishop, and N for knight. Each square of the chessboard is identified by a coordinate from a-h (representing the columns) and 1-8 (representing the rows). For example, a move could be recorded as Bb5 indicating that a Bishop has moved to square b5.
