Underpromotion

Underpromotion in chess is a move in which a pawn is promoted to a knight, bishop, or rook, rather than being promoted to a queen, which is the most common and often most beneficial choice. The advantage of underpromotion is typically to avoid a stalemate, a scenario in which the opponent cannot make a legal move, or to gain a tactical advantage.
