Citizens with guns formed into fighting units by local, State and the Federal governments.

It's the local idiots with fireworks in fire season that I am "celebrating" with.

If the 'patriots' had lost the American War of Independence, then the USA and Canada
may have become independent together. American black slaves may have been freed
about 30 years earlier *without* a bloody civil war.

So let's imagine the USA today as part of a North American federation with Canada.
Most Americans probably would have less racism and better health care.

Would it have been as terrible as flag-waving Americans believe for the 'patriots' to have lost?
Would not many Americans prefer to live in Canada rather than in the USA under President Trump?

Who's celebrating? At that time, most native Americans ('Indians' ) and black slaves
evidently preferred that the British win, expecting better treatment in that case.

If this war had happened a few centuries earlier, it would have taken place without guns.
What then would be the American patriotic mythological excuse for its gun culture?

Given that exceptional arm strength was needed to draw the longbow, that fact could
have been used to justify putting men in power over women (the 'weaker sex' ).

English longbows required a life-time of training.
As far as I am aware no other nation developed the weapon to such a high degree.

Anglo Americans would have and almost did. American gun culture comes directly from British war bow culture. Americans didn’t use longbows for the same reason the British didn’t during the Napoleonic Wars - they were obsolete because of muskets. Ben Franklin wanted a unit of archers.
