After a game where it auto-promoted a pawn to a Queen (which I didn't want) I looked and found the setting to stop auto-promotion and to ask me.
But I just played a move to promote a pawn and it auto-promoted. Fortunately it is ok, but I would have preferred to promote to a knight.
I now can't find the setting regarding promotion rules. Where has it been hidden?
And why can't I search the forums? When I click "search" it comes up with search by author. I want to search for "promotion rules" or "auto promote setting", but it only lets me search for the name of a player. What is the logic behind this?
@Wyn-Davies
At the time of moving your pawn to the 8th row before you hit submit move there is an option to change to another piece.
I also agree the search function is strange; it would make much more sense to search by topic or "key word"
@MartinS
Ah.... I didn't see this, but I probably missed it. The next time I get a chance to promote a pawn I'll look more closely.
@Wyn-Davies
This is often missed, and as you are a long term player here too, it shows how easy this option is to miss.
The new (unreleased) board UI changes the current method.
A screen shot can be seen here
if you want play along with the new board UI beta, see Thread 202479.
@Wyn-Davies saidThere isn't a proper full text search engine implemented on the forums.
And why can't I search the forums?
It is something that has occasionally been requested (and then promised by me) and it does need to be added at some point. Not a priority right now though, unfortunately.
@Wyn-Davies saidYou do not have to wait until you can make a legal pawn promotion.

Just go ahead when you have a game when it's your move.
Take any of your pawns and put it on the 8th rank. At that point the promotion option window will appear. You will not be able to actually make that move, but it will cause the promotion choice window to show up. Just put the pawn back after you look it over, and then make your next legal move. 🙂
The default is promotion to a queen, but there is an arrow icon to the right that you can click, and then the window will open to show all options.
(This is how it's working right now, but I see Russ has some changes coming so hopefully it will be easier to deal with pawn promotions!)
@mwmiller
Ah! You are very wise! This works. And it did take me a little bit to spot the option.
Hmm.... maybe if it was in bold or if there was an icon next to it, it might jump out more. At the moment it is lost in amongst all the other text.
@Wyn-Davies saidIsn't it just below the submit move button?

Not that I get to promote pawns often but did try the illegal promotion trick.
@Wyn-Davies
Agreed! Bold, or blinking, or highlight the window it's in with a bright color so that it jumps out and catches your attention.
And also it would be better to not make it automatically default to a queen, but instead make the player actually select their choice from the list of options. Probably 99% of the time a queen is selected anyway, but I think it should still be an intentional choice that is made by the player.
But I think Russ is currently making some modifications that will include the pawn promotion process, as he has indicated in his posts in this thread.
