If I create an image as a bmp or jpg, do I need my own web page to be able to upload it before I can quote a URL?

You don't need your own webpage, but you do need to upload it somewhere in order to link to it. Try a free image host like www.photobucket.com.

Pray tell. What is the problem with a bmp? As a newcomer to this technology I thought it might be an easy way to get the number of pixels right.

Because they have horribly large file sizes compared to .gif or .jpg.

It's okay, I support you for it just this once. Bmp needs to be stopped..
