Cannot change avatar

I tried changing my avatar, and I got an error message reading:
"Sorry, an error occurred. Please report this problem."

The new pic is lower than the required 32 Kb limit, and is a .jpeg format.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just replaced my avatar with a new .jpg without any problem. Suggest you first try with a different .jpg file to narrow down the cause. Some picture files carry a .jpeg extension (rather than a .jpg) and I've found those to behave unpredictably when doing some things.
