how do i get the instant messages during games?

hello, i don't get thebox i've seen friends get above my boards when i'm messaged during a game, and can't find the option in settings anywhere. my friend had a little set of arrows that he could click on to hide/unhide the messages but i don't have them
(i use latest version of firefox)
any help gratefully received

There is only a message box over the board when you GET a message.

Sending a message is located near the submit move box,

Message your opponent

When you get the message, you see the box over. Send message box is to the right of the board.
