Maybe this should be in the general forum, but...
Is there any way to search the games on RHP by openings? I don't
think there is, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to enter a series of
opening moves and be presented with a list of games in which those
    moves were played?

I found this in another thread from a long time ago but thought it was a wonderful idea.

I like the idea very much as well and you are right: it has been brought up already some times. I guess it causes too much server traffic.

maybe create a monthly download in pgn of all games in a zip format

all games to now put into pgn also

people can add these to their own databases then

(not a computery person, does this mean lots of effort and bandwidth or no?)

I presume you are thinking along the lines of the "Chess Explorer":
    http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer

I don't think that the games on RHP are indexed by move in that way.

What might be possible is to build your own games database, which is indexed by move tree. You could populate it by downloading the PGN/FEN for games off RHP. If you go down this route, it's probably worth posting a note to the "developers" forum as I'm sure others are interested.

I am trying to work out a way I can do this. (Like the explore at chessgames)

This has been on my mind for sometime, and as yet, I don't have a good enough solution to be able to present our games this way. It is the way our games are archived that are causing the headache - but I haven't dedicated more than idle thoughts to it so far.

I will have a version of this available at some point though.
