Seriously, what does the Alert icon do???

Are you referring to the 'Alert Moderator' link at the bottom of each post, or the one that appears on your 'My Games' page?

The first one brings a particular post to the attention of the moderators.

The one on your "My Games' page sorts your games to show the 'time-out' order. (something like that anyway.....)
