Exactly the same way you get normal pictures, they're just saved as different file formats.

Man, just hit Google and search for forum avatars. Try to find one that is the same size as what you need here.

Or make your own. That's what I do. You'd be surprised how easy it is to make a forum avatar using only materials found in your own home: scrap wood, a flathead screwdriver, dryer lint, a Photoshop installation disc, and an industrial heat gun.
