Someone controls the board. A queue of players form to try and take control.
Whoever is in control plays as black and the player at the front of the queue tries to beat them as white. The game played is a normal rated game.
Whichever side wins will now have control of the board and the next person in the queue becomes the challenger. In the event of a draw, then the challenger will take control.
There are lots of boards to choose, each with a different timeout / timebank setting. Adding yourself to a queue can sometimes mean months of waiting before you get to the front of the queue.
