My algebra is very rusty, can't understand why a win (by checkmate) results in a loss of 10 points

If the winner in question is still on provisional rating it may happen. Otherwise it won't.

If you point us to the game, we can probably give a better answer.

I refer to game 11088693 opponent hardly provisional, played in excess of 2300 games. thanks looking forward to your info.enjoy the games but can't understand the scoring. If the winner loses points, does the loser win some?

First, to see what a game is worth in rating points, Thread 80000.
Second, be aware that it's your rating status when the game finishes which makes the calculation.

The usual reason for what appears to be an error in the calculation is that you have had several games finish fairly close together, and your rating has been recalculated to a point where you didn't think you were.

So I suggest you go through all the games that have finished at any time in the 24 hours before this one, line them up in a row and look at the numbers. Your own rating graph can help with this.

Game 11088693

You won points, if you look up the game in your rating graph you had a rating of 1110 your opponent 1118.
After the game you had 1126. You won another game against a 936 rated player and then lost to Macolett to come to your current rating of 1116 which is still above the rating you had before winning the quoted game.

How do you come to the concluison that you lost 10 points?

Ponderable has explained that clearly. In that game you gained some points, then you lost to macolett, which brought it down to 1116. You didn't keep your winning points long enough to notice.
