The first one was pretty easy. The second one, I would have probably missed too, in OTB play, because of all the attacking on the kingside.

P.S. Of course, OTB, nobody would be telling me there was a mate in one.

As I show on the blog.
If you present that 2nd one OTB in the correct way then players will miss it.

Yes, I believe you. Even knowing there was a mate in one, I exhausted all the possiblities on the kingside before I noticed the correct move.

I overlooked the correct move for Black in the following position.

Hey Geoff, Great stuff! One small correction... 12. Bg5 technically isn't checkmate, because black can block with Nf6. (in the first game)

It is a double-check with the rook also. He can't defend both checks with one move.

Wrong game. Just by his wording... He said black can defend mate but in the example with the double check its black who is mating.

He said in the first game. So I thought he meant the Bg4 double-check mate.
It is the second game then. But the mate is Qa3 in that one.

P.S. I get it now. He means the first game on the blog.

First one is well known pattern. Second one is not so well known, but also nothing too hard (found it in a few seconds).

Hi Pacifique

I would expect any good player to spot it from a diagram within a few seconds.
Also OTB. But try it out at your club after you have done the 'sleight fo hand'
to ge their eyes on the Kingside. You will catch someone.
Then you can add; "You must look at ALL the board and Check all Checks."

More missed mates in one from GM games including Kasparov, Korchnoi,
Anderssen and Gligorich.

Those unable to thank me in person can send pizza. I'm cropping up far too often in your blog for my liking. The problem is I read it. After the blog about hook mates I go and get hooked. Must be subliminal.

I must not be a good player for it took me over a minute, I'm sure. I did not time it, but it seemed like it. I know I am a slow thinker and do not do good at speed chess.

They must have been under time presure. Those guys don't miss mates in one under normal circumstances.

P.S. I just looked at the one Kasparov overlooked. That seems to be a hard one to miss, since he would be forking both King and Queen with the knight and should at least saw he could win the Queen, even if he did not see it was also a mate. And he missed it twice.
