Today dear friends is my 14th wedding anniversary, yes indeed, 14 years to the day,
I was married in a large tent, city of Islamabad, Pakistan. The proprietor of the
colonial mansion we were renting was a detective inspector of police, Mr Isaq, a
huge body of a man, who had a driver and someone sitting beside him, literally
riding shotgun everywhere he went.
Occasionally he stopped by to use one of the six bathrooms, in this instance, his
presence was to close the road for our festivities and to leave us two of his best
men as security. Those guys loved me, it was their job to sit outside on a kind of
wicker bed and watch out for undesirables, but it was Punjabi hot and I used to bring
them refrigerated filtered water and mangoes, which they appreciated, but nothing
tickled them more than a smattering of Punjabi, 'twanu vecke ussi jinia, I see you
and I live. Once I went to the market and one accompanied me, a man ages with
myself from Kashmir approached, apparently he came too close, my friend flashed
a handgun from beneath his kamiz and with a stern countenance bid the man to
withdraw, I apologised for his behaviour and said that he meant no harm, but he
had been offended, I could see it in his eyes.
For six days prior to our wedding, we had danced, as is the custom, all our
neighbours and their children came around everyday, food and hospitality in
abundance, the young people vying to see who was the best dancer, dance is huge
in this culture, as is poetry and song. Once in our street there were four weddings
at once, sleep was at a premium, tabla drums beating out as if they were nocturnal
creatures, coming alive in the night.
My wife wore a simple white sari, not the heavy red and gold traditional lenga, she
was beautiful, jasmine flowers in her hair and composed of a quite dignity,
whispering her directions into my ear.
