It is an opening trap or a trick that just happens to be in the position?
SG quite rightly posted:
"All traps involve bad play from the opponent."
But a genuine Opening Trap must involve an element of risk from the trap setter.
All the examples so far are coming from natural moves. If the vic does not
blunder into the trick then no harm done.
Here is a real opening trap. I've caught quite a few with this in blitz and OTB.
Try it, you will catch someone but if it fails to induce a blunder (6...Nxe4) then
you have nothing except a miserble game to look forward too.
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 {So far so normal and Black is now preparing the recall 200 lines of theory. But....} 6. Nd5 {Black should play IMO 6....Nxd5 when to avoid losing a pawn White has to play 7.Bb5+. Pieces are coming off. Black has 2 v 1 centre pawns, Black has no developing problems, White has no chance to get at the King he has tossed his first move plus out of the window on a gamble.} 6... Nxe4 {White's dodgy move move is answered by a baddie. That was the gamble. This is the pay off.} 7. Bb5+ Bd7 8. Qe2 {Black is in a right mess. Had two OTB games where Black played Nf6 or Nc4 (Nf6 mate!)} 8... f5 {Another common choice. The play goes something like this.} 9. Ne6 Qa5+ 10. b4 Bxb5 11. c4 {It's a Black shambles. But remember it came about by White knowingly playing a dodgy move. A genuine opening trap.}
