I fid a quick look to see if I had a Peter playing a Marvin.
Plenty of Peters, many more Marvins but none played each other.

How many bargain bins did you have to rummage through to find that little gem? 😀

It was on the top of a pile of old comics in a shop in North Beriwck.
They were 50p but the back cover was torn so I haggled.

I was there organising a boat trip for me and Mrs Greenpawn to go for
boat trip to the Isle of May...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_May

...which is now a bird sanctuary because Mrs G. has never seen a Puffin.
(I wonder what they taste like.)

This is island is also covered in Viking tombs (some have been looted)
and it was from one of them the (ahem...) 'Lewis Gaming Pieces' came from.

On the return trip I'm planing on pushing Mrs. G. overboard.
She is a strong swimmer she should back it back to shore OK.
I can then claim a partial refund.

I could not help noticing that in the fifth picture, whilst Peter King seems to have a fairly standard set-up as Black, Marvin Knight seems to have ingeniously placed most of his pieces on the c1 square. I am not sure from which opening this position could have arisen, but presumably this is the blunder referred to in this salutary tale for us all.
I am also intrigued by the observation that Peter Knight appears to be playing with over-sized garden chess pieces in the living room, and wonder to what extent this may have given him a psychological advantage over his opponent.

Wow, you've been hunting Viking chess sets! Have you played the Viking version of chess (forget the name). You have a king and some pawns surrounded by enemies and you have to escape to the edge of the board. It looks really simple but it is REALLY hard!! I've never won a game but i'm told it is possible. I'll try and find a link, you can play it online...

EDIT: Yes it's called tafl. I can't seem to find a working version as everything is in java which my computer doesn't like. Here is wiki though...

Good game. Quite like Go actually, but probably a bit harder.. 🙂
