Back in my OTB days, I.M. John Donaldson gave a short lecture at our local chess club with this key piece of advise: "Always play against the position on the board in front of you, and NOT the person moving the pieces" In other words, ignore the rating and focus on winning!

@mchill Yes, that's a good quotation, and it's accurate! A little harder to put into practice, but it's a good thing to keep in mind.
