A brief review of the few pages I have read so far of a murder mystery set
around a chess tournament; ‘The Sponsor’ by Fred Das & Jeroen Terlingen.
The tournament is Wijk ann Zee the principle players are made up names.
Not sure if they are inspired by real players. I’m not too happy so far as
I can see the settings for mushy lovey - dovey scenes already developing.
Puzzles and a then look at Stalemates. Did you know there are just under 1,000
instant stalemates on RHP from players needlessly promoting to a Queen.
I show some OTB games where players are taking Bishops and ‘thankfully
and gratefully’ I found a very few where alert RHP players have done the same.

I read the Queens Gambit in the mid 80's it was OK.
I've not see the Netflix version. I suppose to keep a
story ticking over for a non-player they have to have
some romance but it can take over the story.
I like Sci-fi but all too often these days it is a love story set
in a space ship . Not Mills and Boon but Mills and Moon.
For a good chess story, and you could not make it up.
Ray Keene's book on the 1978 Karpov - Korchnoi match,
and you also get the great games.

Korchnoi didn't like Karpov much but I think it was mote political than chess related
