Hey guys, need some help. I got a big OTB game on Thursday, round 5 on board 1, 8 round tournament with some prize money so it's important. This other guy and me are tied for 1st with 4 each and we are playing each other, with him having White I suspect. He played the King's gambit against me last year and I've seen him play it against other people. However, yesterday he tried the vienna gambit and crushed his opponent in a minature. I was on the board besides them and it was awful. I suspect he will play the vienna gambit vs me.

1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5

This is what i'm thinking of playing as black against the Vienna. I never played this line so I need some help with it. I will search for games on chessgames.com etc but are there any sites with annotated games on this for free, or opening ideas etc... or if anyone had the bookup e-books on this and can help me out?

Also If he play the Kings gambit then I will play

1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d5

I had pretty good results with this and don't play the g5 stuff.

An help with this line would be great also.

I like this line if White plays 5 d3:

1 e4 e5
2 Nc3 Nf6
3 f4 d5
4 fxe5 Nxe4
5 d3 Nxc3
6 bxc3 d4
7 Nf3 Nc6
8 cxd4 Bb4+
9 Bd2 Bxd2+
10 Qxd2 Nxd4
11 c3 Nxf3+
12 gxf3 Qh4+
13 Qf2 Qf4

I see d4 being played. d3 is to passive and he's an aggressive person.

Shh, it's the super-variation that no one is supposed to know about.
Now we will have to kill you.

If he play's the King's Gambit I suggest

1. e4 e5
2. f4 d5
3. exd5 exf4

It's the line suggest by Schiller and Watson in "How to beat annoying chess openings." It's free of tactical pitfalls, so I like it. It's a variation of the falkbeer, except exf4 in stead of e4!?

A perusal through a competent database of games with this opening might give some good ideas.

exf4... I would prefer e5e4 (standard Falkbeer) as it gives black some of the center and easier development (it's called the Falkbeer "Counter Gambit" for a reason, black gambits a pawn for a more even game)

If I was white and black played 3...g5 I would probably respond with 4.Bc4, then after 4...g4 5. O-O

Ya I don't like the falkbeer much. It like the albin counter gambit with the d4 push.

I got some ideas from pete tamburro's opening for amauteurs site and some interesting analysis from young fisher. He lost to spassky and wrote some analysis which busts the kings gambit. I briefly looked over it but they are saying now, after all these years and research white has better resources.

If you hate the King's Gambit, then type in "Bobby Fischer" and "King's Gambit" in the same Google searchbar. It will greatly encourage you.

What are you getting at? Did you not read what I wrote? He say that he busted the kings gambit, and i will go over his analysis later on.

Perhaps if he is into playing very tactical openings there is something to be said for playing the French or Caro-Kann.

I know it pisses me off, which is why I play them =)
