Just a brief to let you see what happens with craip design.

My job is to lead car design teams in the right direction, (not that some of you will be bothered), so that you are safe when you travel.

Well these pics are of the Mercedes - yes "the smart" car that came out of Germany, the so called pinnacle of car design and safety!

I'll let you know I would never design a car that 'bounces' off another one - physics in its simplicity would never permit this in 1 ton of metal! Energy absorbtion is the answer in longerons and sending the engine downwards before it hits the bulkhead and moves the rest into your compartment. Well that's a very basic explanation.

care to explain how your "direction" in car safety design would have helped in this accident? Seems to me this car didn't "bounce" anywhere and that it did a fine job absorbing the energy of that semi all the way into the trunk.

aye it would! That steering wheel wouldn't be in the second tier seat! The dash wouldn't be past the front seats..... . Yeah admittedly it's a mess..... but the engine pushed the whole front thru the seating area - not DOWN!...... That's what hurt... .

If the engine had gone down the top would have sliced off - yes - but the airbags would have pushed the occupant heads under the lorry! Hurt - yes - dead - debatable!

What's a lorry?

Are you saying that the engine, dashboard and steering wheel should have gone under the seats as they went back? Does that cause an ejector seat like effect, with the seats rising up out of harm's way?

A lorry is a juggernaut to you!

Nope the engine should hit the floor before it hits the bulkhead (firewall to you, but it doesn't stop fire - so US has loads of lawsuits over tha one!πŸ˜›)

The structural important part is the A-pillar joint to the floor. If the A-pillar fails, your knacked mate!

The steel used on that car was obviously substandard, as Merc reduced costs. It didn't meet the yield strength and just sliced as the engine rode into the pasesnger compartment. It didn't hellp that the lorry bumper height was totally non-compliant with any international legal standards such as FMVSS and EuroNCAP!.....

That's why I work to the letter of the law! Unfortunately, some money spinning so called Euro top class companies don't! Ooops - German sniper after me now!..... come get me!! πŸ˜›πŸ˜›πŸ˜›
