I play 2.e5 against the caro-kann these days. Is it OK? It certainly takes my opponents out of book.

I don't think it moves your opponent too far afield. After 2. ... d4, the game either transposes into the advanced variation, or you take e.p., black recaptures with the pawn and then pushes; black can still get caro-kann like structures with a better light squared bishop than in some situations.

looks bad but if it works (you win with it) there should be no problem
