Whenever I play 1.e4 I find myself hoping that my opponent won't play 1...e5. It just feels like I'm going to get stuck in an Italian or 3/4 Knights Opening which, due to a high level ignorance of the intricacies of these openings, leaves me feeling cold and heading for a dull game. I'd be grateful if anyone had any ideas on either

1. Making Italian/Bishops's/3 or 4 Knights openings more interesting/attacking for white and/or...

2. What other options white has after 1.e4 e5. Bear in mind that I'm not sure I have the guts to play the King's Gambit!

Cheers,

Evans gambit, scotch game, vienna and bishop's opening. All very good openings.I always play e4 and answer e5 with Bc4(the bishop opening).BUT,I don't play it as a gambit,I play d3 and if possible f4.Knights go to f3 and c3 or sometimes d2.It's similar to the vienna but slightly better(according to theory). It's a fairly easy to learn set-up,and gives great attacking chances. There's a book by John Emms,"attacking with e4",that explains these lines and also gives you a repertoire against all other possible black answers to e4.Check it out.🙄

It's strange, a lot of people like the queen gambit, because you can create more space to set up a good attack. But I've never lost a game when someone played it......😏

In the right hands it can be dangerous...the lead in development and position of whites bishops (along with attacking chances) makes it a good opening if you know it well.
