Is 2. e5 objectively good? I haven't seen it ever as long as I have been using the French Defense but it has appeared on me 3 times in the last week. And is 2...d6 the best response to it?

If the pawn is then taken the natural move is Bxd6. Alternatively white transposes into the Advanced variation of French via d4.

EDIT: Corrected the typo i made the move should say Bxd6 not Bxb6 as it was originally. Sorry.

He meant Bxd6, but anyway. Thank you for your response. Does anyone else have any experiences with 2. e5?
Originally posted by TimmyToiletI agree....just play 2...d5. It makes no sense for white to move his e-pawn twice and then get rid of it en passant, helping you develop and put your bishop on a great square. I'd go with d5. There is no benefit to white for not playing 2. d4, which is obvious and best! 😀

Originally posted by !~TONY~!The only reason as white i would play 2. e5, is to confuse an unprepared opponent in the hope that she/he plays a wild move that gives me an advantage. Moving 3. d4 would always be my intention depending on how wild Black's second move is.

Originally posted by TimmyToilet2..... d5 is my standard move, it is the one i do after two nanoseconds of thought. I know the options for white's reply, so i know what is coming and how to deal with it.
So what do we think is better objectively? 2...c5 or 2...d5?
2..... c5 is interesting and i must admit i night try it next time i have the chance.
In the end both moves are good, it is just what suits you and what move you have prepared for best.
