Yes, Main Playing Hall is the main playing chess room in the playchess server. You can download the client at playchess.com (I'm not advertising--just getting more and more people to fill it up; not that it needs any more help though) and get a "free" 30 day trial.
I spent more than 30 days but still got playing time so I don't know what they meant by free. Maybe it's the additional features like being able to "applause" the opponent but I actually don't mind not being able to "applause" someone... there are more additional features but those don't tend to interrupt with what matters most which is playing chess.
