Hi,

From one of my games(some cute tactic that me and my opponent missed):

[Event "FICS standard game"]

[Time "07:34:46 GMT"]
[Round "-"]
[White "vipiu"]
[Black "Lomax"]
[Result "0-1"]

1.d4 {[%emt 0:00:00]} g6 {[%emt 0:00:00]} 2.c4 {[%emt 0:00:20]} Bg7 {[%emt 0:00:03]} 3.Nc3 {[%emt 0:00:07]} c5 {[%emt 0:00:02]} 4.d5 {[%emt 0:00:22]} Bxc3+ {[%emt 0:00:02]} 5.bxc3 {[%emt 0:00:14]} f5 {[%emt 0:00:02]
siggemannen(1818) whispers: this line is very cool
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: Id take white personally
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: but its nicely unbalanced}
6.f3 {[%emt 0:02:08]
siggemannen(1818) whispers: it "should" be better for white, but i've play it in blitz, and white generally struggles}
6...Nf6 {[%emt 0:00:26]
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: well, in blitz anything unusual has some value
siggemannen(1818) whispers: i like f3 though... don't think i played in in my blitz games}
7.Nh3 {[%emt 0:05:34]} d6 {[%emt 0:00:37]} 8.Nf2 {[%emt 0:00:21]} Qa5 {[%emt 0:00:12]
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: Qc2 seems to cover the weak pawns
Doubleletter(1875) whispers: qb3 otherwise b5 ?
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: I dont really see b5 as a problem
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: my thinking is that white wants the queen to operate on the kingside eventually
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: also, Qb3 Bd7->a4 is a bit of a bugger
cynick(2000) whispers: maybe Qd3 then. solves all the problems mentioned above.}
9.Qb3 {[%emt 0:06:23]
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: yes maybe that was best}
9...Nbd7 {[%emt 0:00:33]
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: though black then would have a plan of a6, Bd7 and b5
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: or maybe even b5 straight off}
10.e3 {[%emt 0:01:35]
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: can white afford to play slowly here?
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: seems like the advantage of the dark-squared bishop should be realised quickly
cynick(2000) whispers: locking in your trumph card with e3 certainly does not look logical
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: yes, and it seems to me that its only a trump card in the middlegame
smallblackcat(1925) whispers: in an endgame, with this structure, it doesnt count for much}
10...Nb6 {[%emt 0:02:48]} 11.Bd3 {[%emt 0:01:33]} Bd7 {[%emt 0:00:07]} 12.O-O {[%emt 0:02:04]} O-O-O {[%emt 0:00:10]} 13.e4 {[%emt 0:00:39]} Ba4 {[%emt 0:03:05]} 14.Qb2 {[%emt 0:00:57]} fxe4 {[%emt 0:02:19]} 15.Nxe4 {[%emt 0:01:46]} Qa6 {[%emt 0:00:51]
cynick(2000) whispers: now Rb1 and white must be better
siggemannen(1818) whispers: nxd5 then?
cynick(2000) whispers: then something like Ng5
cynick(2000) whispers: or possibly Qe2 first}
16.Qe2 {[%emt 0:03:02]} Nxe4 {[%emt 0:00:11]
cynick(2000) whispers: I was thinking Bb3 here
siggemannen(1818) whispers: black queen might get into trouble on a1}
17.fxe4 {[%emt 0:02:47]} Qa5 {[%emt 0:03:49]} 18.Rf7 {[%emt 0:02:50]} Rde8 {[%emt 0:00:20]
cynick(2000) whispers: e5 suggests itself
Implications(1742) whispers: e5 is a bit biased.}
19.e5 {[%emt 0:02:36]
cynick(2000) whispers: well, as it suggests itself, I have not analyzed it 🙂
siggemannen(1818) whispers: hmm, black looks kinda bad🙂
siggemannen(1818) whispers: black doesn't have many moves
cynick(2000) whispers: black has bundched most of his pieces together on the q-side where they do nothing
Implications(1742) whispers: Bd1+ wins the white queen.
Implications(1742) whispers: Oh, Qxd1. Nevermind.}
19...e6 {[%emt 0:03:48]
siggemannen(1818) whispers: hmmm
siggemannen(1818) whispers: this can't be good 😀
cynick(2000) whispers: agree, but I can't see any obvious refutation
cynick(2000) whispers: dxe6 Rxe6 Qf3 perhaps?
siggemannen(1818) whispers: bc6 then?
cynick(2000) whispers: then Be4 is the idea at least
Lomax(2021) whispers: Lot's of long and complicated lines here
Lomax(2021) whispers: But black HAD to do smth
Lomax(2021) whispers: So e6 was virtually my only choice
Lomax(2021) whispers: If it's not good, the whole black game isn't
siggemannen(1818) whispers: i like that}
20.Bf4 {[%emt 0:09:32]
cynick(2000) whispers: Qxc3 now at least wins a pawn.
cynick(2000) whispers: always better to be up material if one has a worse position.}
20...Qxc3 {[%emt 0:04:25]} 21.Rf1 {[%emt 0:01:10]
ZwaartePaard(1791) whispers: ed ?
tujhbq(1564) whispers: aga
tujhbq(1564) whispers: klassnij hod}
21...exd5 {[%emt 0:01:57]
siggemannen(1818) whispers: qg4?
siggemannen(1818) whispers: nah, that just sucks
ZwaartePaard(1791) whispers: Bd2 ?
Lomax(2021) whispers: Still very complicated, but in view of Qg4+ Bd7 and black should be fine (Rxd7 Nxd7 e6 Nf6) I guess I'm doing ok}
22.cxd5 {[%emt 0:05:06]} Qd4+ {[%emt 0:00:38]} 23.Kh1 {[%emt 0:00:41]} Qxd5 {[%emt 0:02:28]
Lomax(2021) whispers: Trying to make use of the fact that his Rf7 is attacked
}
24.Bg3 {[%emt 0:02:13]} Bc6 {[%emt 0:00:09]} 25.h3 {[%emt 0:04:13]} dxe5 {[%emt 0:03:30]
Lomax(2021) whispers: Kb8 exd RxQ d7+ Ka8 Rf8+ and mate is a nice one 😉}
26.Kh2 {[%emt 0:03:35]} c4 {[%emt 0:00:13]} 27.Bc2 {[%emt 0:00:24]} Nd7 {[%emt 0:00:28]} 28.Kh1 {[%emt 0:00:46]} Ref8 {[%emt 0:01:34]} 29.Rxf8+ {[%emt 0:00:24]} Rxf8 {[%emt 0:00:02]} 30.Rxf8+ {[%emt 0:00:56]} Nxf8 {[%emt 0:00:01]} 31.Bxe5 {[%emt 0:01:26]} Ne6 {[%emt 0:00:28]} 32.Kh2 {[%emt 0:01:07]} b6 {[%emt 0:00:19]} 33.a4 {[%emt 0:00:52]} a6 {[%emt 0:00:02]} 34.Kh1 {[%emt 0:00:51]} b5 {[%emt 0:00:02]} 35.axb5 {[%emt 0:00:13]} axb5 {[%emt 0:00:02]} 36.Bd1 {[%emt 0:00:31]} Kb7 {[%emt 0:00:19]} 37.Bg3 {[%emt 0:00:15]} b4 {[%emt 0:00:07]} 38.Kg1 {[%emt 0:01:55]
vipiu(2070) whispers: I cannot even put my bishop on f3...}
38...b3 {[%emt 0:00:52]}
{vipiu resigns} 0-1

Can someone pls post the fen after move 23...Qxd5 ?

Problem: try to guess what is the best line there (1st move for white and 1st move for black in the best line) ?

I reckon it's 24.Rxb7. The idea is that 24..Kxb7 is met by 25.Be4 and 24..Qxb7 is met by 25.Ba6. In either case, Black loses his queen.

I've no idea what Black should do in response to Rxb7 though - apart from not taking the rook!

Edit - I've just noticed 24.Rxb7 Bb5! and then if 25.Bxb5 Black can take the rook with 25..Kxb7.

That seems to throw a big spanner in the works!

Bb5, if BxB KxR

Edit: It seems David has found it, I'm not sure how the line proceeds though.

correct...I think this is very difficult to see and it is only move that holds black advantage(at least my engine says so)
I liked this tactic, I think it is that kind of tactics that engine spots very easy but for humans it is very difficult to see it(both moves-white and black) during a normal OTB game

I can't see anything better than 24.Rxb7 Bb5! 25.Bxb5 Kxb7 26.Bxe8 Rxe8. But Black seems to be ok in the final position.

A very nice exercise.

24 Rxb7 is still best for white...you can notice that white is 2 pawns down now...and after your lkine it will be only one pawn down....

White just trades his rook for a pawn and a bishop
