If you recognize your current position as one you have been in before is it against ethics/the rules to look at your archived games to see what you did last time and how the game turned out?

Nope, in correspondance games like this you are allowed to use opening books, end game tables,etc., so it shouldn't be a problem looking up your old games. Just don't use a computer, that's against the rules.

How are they going to be able to tell if a person is using a computer or not?

That's where the ethics come in.
(or they could use a computer themselves after the game)

You can use a computer if it is a database, you can't ask something (human or machine) that can calculate lines for advice.
